Prevalence/Facts

  • 819,000 adults in Minnesota have a mental health condition, with one out of five Minnesotans experiencing a mental health illness each year. (National Alliance on Mental Illness)

    • That’s more than 9x the population of Duluth!

Early Warning Signs

  • Drastic swing in mood, form really high highs to really low lows.

    • Or, feeling sad and down for a prolonged period of time.

  • No longer joining in social gatherings/withdrawing from social activities or time with friends.

  • Trouble sleeping, low energy, and increased tiredness.

Supporting Others

  • Be a safe person to talk to.

    • Don’t try to diagnose their feelings and listen carefully.

    • Don’t push them to share – let them say as much or as little as they want.

  • Remind people that you care.

  • Know the limits of the help you can provide, and offer to help them in seeking further support or resources.

Supporting Yourself

  • Take time to practice self care and do the things you enjoy

    • Go for a walk, catch up with a friend, read a book.

  • Don’t add too much to your plate.

  • Get plenty of sleep.

  • Establish boundaries and know it’s okay to say “no.”

    • This hotline offers support with a peer-to-peer approach, it is an anonymous and safe way to reach out to professionals who are there to listen and help.

    • A hotline for early intervention – they provide support to help prevent a crises from escalating.
